It has more than one mechanism of action. By activating the natural defense system of plants, it promotes the accumulation of some antimicrobial compounds and phytoalexins. The plant recognizes this as a pathogen attack with its receptor cells and begins to produce disease-associated proteins (PR proteins) at the cellular level, thereby inhibiting the development of the fungal cell. The other main mode of action is its direct fungicidal effect against pathogenic fungi.

It promotes resistance mechanisms against pathogens by enabling plants to synthesize phytoalexins against diseases such as downy mildew and phytophthora.
